WAA “Letter from the President”
Fall 2013
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
~ Pablo Picasso
We hope you all had a wonderful summer with your family and friends! It flies by so quickly, and here we all are again – so busy with the bustling art activity of fall in Wilmington!Fall 2013
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

First of all, a big “WELCOME” to all of our newest members! We are very happy to have you as part of this wonderful organization. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have at elainerogerscooper@gmail.com <mailto:elainerogerscooper@gmail.com> . I would be happy to hear from you.
Secondly—a sincere “Thank you!” to the 40+ artists who have signed up to participate in our “eARTh Inspired Art Show” that we are hosting in collaboration with the UNCW Office of Cultural Arts. The art is so beautiful—and so diverse. So fascinating to see how 40+ eyes and hearts see the world around us…
Please join us this Friday, September 27th, at 6:00pm at the Hannah Block Community Arts Center (on the corner of 2nd & Orange Sts.) for our Opening Reception, as part of “Fourth Friday.” Between 6-7:00pm, there will be a preview of the new symphony, “Ocean Calling,” by noted pianists Norman Bemelmans and Elizabeth Lopartis of UNCW. Enjoy the art, the music, the refreshments and the wine!!
The Show is now on exhibit and will remain in the Hannah Block Lobby until October 16th.
Reminders
*Please remember “Art in the Arboretum!” It is always a wonderful Show—and the registration deadline is September 27th!! If you have not registered as yet, please download the prospectus and email a jpeg of your three pieces of art to Alice Wilson at a.byrdnest@gmail.com <mailto:a.byrdnest@gmail.com> as soon as possible!
Also, for those of you who have already registered—please check on the website for opportunities to help with the Show!!
*Please remember “Art for the Masses!” Registration is taking place right now—and the Show is on Saturday, November 23rd. Go to their website with this link: http://uncw.edu/artforthemasses/ <http://uncw.edu/artforthemasses/>
Their new venue at UNCW was a big hit last year—and I am sure that spaces are filling up quickly. So-o, get busy!
*Please remember our “WAA Holiday Dinner!” Please mark your calendars for:
Wednesday, December 11th. Yes, it IS on a Wednesday this year! Stay tuned for more details…
Finally, please remember that we have asked for two additional volunteers to work with our Publicity Chair, Dorian Hill, and Committee member Jan Johnson. Happily, there are many publicity venues in Wilmington, and we need a little help to make sure that we are ‘connected’ to all those sources. The work is not difficult or onerous—and four members would make very light work of it!! We would so appreciate your assistance…so please don’t hesitate to email Dorian Hill at: publicity1@wilmingtonart.org <mailto:publicity1@wilmingtonart.org> or me at elainerogerscooper@gmail.com <mailto:elainerogerscooper@gmail.com> .
HAPPY ART-MAKING!

The Wilmington Art Association is looking for a new “Treasurer” for our WAA Board of Directors.
Diane McCord, who has served
so wonderfully in this position for two years, is stepping down at the end of this year. “Thank you so much, Diane!!”
We are asking WAA members, who have been a member for one year or more, and who have some accounting experience, to please consider stepping into this very important position. All of the groundwork is totally in place—nothing needs to be invented, re-invented, etc.!!
If you might be interested in helping the WAA in this capacity, please contact:
Elaine Cooper –elainerogerscooper@gmail.com <mailto:%D0elainerogerscooper@gmail.com>
Diane McCord –dmccord@ec.rr.com <mailto:%D0dmccord@ec.rr.com>

There is room in the window for approximately 10 artists to exhibit 2 art pieces and is on a first to sign up basis. The art remains on display for 2 months.
The Independence Mall management is providing the WAA (non-profit organization) with window space in an un-rented store -- at no charge. The WAA exhibit is located to the left of the mall entrance into BELK'S Department Store.
Due to not having a way to process sales the WAA does not require a fee or commission to exhibit in the mall window. When a customer is interested in your art piece they will use the information provided on the hang tag and either call or email the artist directly. The artist will then notify Anita Jacques to make the arrangements to retrieve the artwork:
