General Meeting Thursday November 12, 2015
Program presented by Justine Ferreri

The Wilmington Art Association will present the work of Justine Ferreri at its November 12th meeting, which is open to the public. The meeting will be at the New Hanover County Arboretum, 6202 Oleander Drive. A social at 6:30 will be followed by a short business meeting, and the program is from 8 - 9 PM.

Justine Ferreri was born in Arumagawa, Japan. She has lived in North Carolina more than half her life and considers herself a true blue North Carolinian who now creates her art and grows her business in Wilmington.

As a young woman, Justine studied art, mostly in the performing fields of ballet, modern dance, guitar and musical theater. She says, "Sculpture fell into my lap by accident." Her eyes light up as she tells the story ...

"My husband and I were in the hotel and restaurant business, and I was decorating our restaurant in Wilmington named Justine's. As the theme was an Italian festival, I decided to make full scale papier-mâché people eating and sitting in the restaurant. From those first pieces I was offered several commissions, and then a local gallery asked me to exhibit. I evolved later into using polymer clay and finally to my medium now, earthenware. My works really do reflect my life. My feeling for the Japanese culture and my dancing can be seen in many of my works. My jesters and circus pieces come from living in Wildwood, New Jersey and the carnival atmosphere of the boardwalk. My sea creatures come from the fact I've always lived near the water. All of my works whether large or small are a part of me."

An avid reader and lover of Sci-Fi, many of Justine's works are based upon things she has read. She draws from her vast knowledge of mythology, legends, and her own series of unpublished short stories. Pulling from her constantly flowing imagination, Justine creates a world in clay that comes to life before your eyes - each sculpture a conversation piece for your home, your office, or as a unique gift for friends, family members or clients.

To date, Justine's portfolio of animated creations includes a collection of clay goddesses, wall plaques, prayer angels, "bubble-boys", beach items, mermaid door pulls, and a large collection of original pieces.

In addition to her gallery pieces, Justine regularly donates valuable originals to the Wilmington Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, the North Carolina Jazz Festival, Susan G. Komen Foundation fundraisers, First in Families of Southeastern North Carolina, and Cape Fear Literacy Council.

 with MARK KELVIN HORTON
Bald Head Island, Nov 16, 17,18

This course is designed for oil painters of all levels who want to take their work to the next level. Emphasis will be on helping students discover their own personal style and process in creating their work.

AitA WrapUp

A BIG thank you to all the wonderful artists and volunteers who exhibited and helped with Art in the Arboretum 2015. This three day Art Show and Sale, the Arboretum’s most important fund raiser, could not have taken place without your generous help and support.

Despite the challenging and messy weather and weekend postponement, the exhibit was once again an event we can all be proud of.

For all those who have been questioning how the show went, the final income and numbers are being finalized. We believe the show did well considering all the challenges we faced. We will be sending another e-mail with that information as soon as it is available.

We would also welcome your valuable feedback to help us plan and execute next year’s and future exhibits. Please send them to mwillfont@gmail.com.  We will include and discuss them in our final committee wrap up meeting.

Thanks again for all your help with this years AitA.

Change in Program for Thursday's Meeting

WAA Program Change, Thursday, October 8th 2015

"Performance Painting"

Demonstration by Cammeron Batanides

Our meeting will take place at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on 16th Street at 6.30pm this Thursday.  We find that our previously advertised presenter is unfortunately experiencing flooding around the NE Cape Fear River area adjacent to her home.

We are most fortunate to welcome Cammeron Batanides, who is an instructor at CFCC and at the Cameron Museum.  Using rich, vibrant colors to bring the art of music to life on canvas, Batanides' style will make you want to dance, sing, and lose yourself in the rhythm of the moment.  A native of Charlotte currently living in Wilmington, she is an international fine artist and children's book author/illustrator.  Predominantly working with acrylics, watercolor and charcoal, her works have been featured across the United States and Jamaica.  Cammeron will speak to us about her work in performance painting, and demonstrate interpreting music in painting.

Do come to mingle with your fellow WAA artists and to watch this dynamic, interesting and different demo.

See you on Thursday,

Parking is around the back of the church off Princess. PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE OF VENUE!

Our speaker will be Bonnie Rogers who teaches pastel figure drawing at the Cameron Museum School. Bonnie will give a demonstration of her beautiful pastel work and will demo a live figure painting in pastel. She is excited to share her passion with like-minded artists. Bonnie has a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Arts from UNC-Wilmington. She worked  as a graphic designer and is an award-winning artist and teacher in pastel and oils.
Her work is figurative, and she also enjoys landscape painting en plein air.

Let your friends know - and remind them of the venue change. This change is just for October's meeting. The meeting in November will be at NHC Arboretum, when we will welcome Justine Ferreri, well-known Wilmington clay artist.
