Art After Hours

Art After Hours – January 16, 2017

The subject for January’s Art After Hours will focus on use of social media including Facebook and Instagram and also on the design of a website.

For the social media aspect of this, we are looking for one or more artists who have a high degree of proficiency with Facebook and/or Instagram.  If you do and would be willing to attend the meeting to help provide expertise, please contact Jay at jdc001@mac.com.

The second portion of this discussion will deal with how to design a good website.   The purpose is not to actually show how to technically put together a website or to use a specific software, but to discuss its organization, content, operation and appearance.  A number of websites of non-local artists will be reviewed and critiqued and discussed.  We may also provide information on a number of software systems that are available to artists should they wish to design their own website along with ratings, cost, etc.

If there are one or more artists who have been through this process, have designed their site and who would be willing to add their expertise, please contact Jay at jdc001@mac.com.

The January Art After Hours will be January 16^th, 6 PM to 8 PM at Henry’s Restaurant, 2508 Independence Boulevard (Independence and Shipyard).  Henry’s has prepared a limited menu for our use for this evening.

The room is limited to 30 people.  First we will insure that we have the necessary artists to provide knowledge on the subject matter, and the balance will be accepted based on emails sent to jdc001@mac.com.  A waiting list will be established in the event you find later that you are unable to attend.

Showtime!
Many of our artists have been busily painting pictures of their elves, performers in the upcoming Elf Jr performance. You can see their art plus the show December 1 through 4, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm, and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3 pm, at the USO/Hannah Block Center.

Long time WAA member Susan Dade has been chosen to have her painting, Southport at Noon, on this year's Star-News Cup.
There will be a Signing of the Cup at the Star-News on Wednesday November 30 and at the Ricky Evans Gallery on Friday December 2.

The 35^th Annual Juried Spring Art Show & Sale - Poster Art Contest

October 1, 2016 – November 25, 2016

The 2017 Spring Show Committee announces the Poster Art Contest for the 35^th Annual Juried Art Show & Sale.  The winning artwork will be featured on  a framed poster to be auctioned off at the Show, posters available for sale at the Show, smaller posters, cards, invitations and other publicity material for the Show.   

Entry requirements

·         Current membership (2016) in the WAA

·         Artwork in any 2-D or 3-D media and on any non-offensive subject

·         One piece of artwork per artist

Submission requirements

·         Entry must be emailed to bcarter.art@outlook.com.  Your entry should include artwork in .jpg format as well as artist’s name, address, phone number and email address.

·         Signature on the artwork must be blocked.

·         Submittal of entries opens October 1, 2016

·         Deadline to receive entries is midnight, Friday, November 25, 2016.

Selection

The Show committee will select the winning artwork on Monday, December 1, 2016.   The winner will be contacted immediately and announced on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the WAA Holiday Banquet.  

Selected Artwork

The selected artwork may not be entered into the Show.  The artwork will be displayed at the Show and may be offered for sale; however, it is not required to be for sale.  If the artwork is sold either prior to or during the Show, the standard 30% commission will be due WAA.   A framed poster will be on display and auctioned off at the Show with proceeds to benefit WAA. The artist will be asked to sign posters during the Show reception on Thursday, April 6, 2017.   All proceeds from poster sales will benefit WAA. 

Art after Hours

The first meeting of Art after Hours was held Monday evening. The reserved room at Henry's was full of WAA members who enjoyed the company, the food and drink, and the interesting discussions in which everyone participated. The next one will be held January 16, 2017.

We will gather at the Arboretum at 6 pm for social time.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 and be followed by a fun program presented by Dumay Gorham. 
 

Dumay Gorham, III is a Wilmington native and a graduate of NCSU and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.  He has been welding and working in metal for 15 years. As one of the many talented artists at ACME Art Studios in downtown Wilmington, he specializes in custom metal sculpture and design projects by commission.  His work, which utilizes a variety of metals and finishing techniques, ranges from delicate tabletop pieces to large public installations.  He has also worked on a number of film and TV productions as a special effects technician.

Copper has always been Dumay's favorite metal. His exhibitions of creations in copper at Airlie Gardens, UNCW, NC Arboretum and elsewhere showcase his talent for bringing creatures, both real and imagined, into the third dimension.

 

Dumay will bring some of his smaller wonderful creations to our Thursday meeting, and tell us about his background and techniques.

HOLIDAY ART SHOW :   Bring a new work to include in the exhibit.  We will vote on several Members' Choice Awards.  Work should be completed in the last two years, not previously shown in a WAA exhibit.  Framing is not necessary, but a label including your name, title, medium and size must be secured to the back of the work to be included.

of the Durham Arts Council Building, in Durham NC, runs from November 11 to January 13.

Bellamy Mansion Announces Commemorative Post Card Contest for 2017 “Wilmington: Then and Now” Art Show and Sale
 

The Bellamy Mansion invites artists to submit their inspirational ideas of “Wilmington: Then and Now” to be named the 2017 Commemorative Postcard.

​The Bellamy Mansion  is excited to announce a commemorative postcard contest to be held in conjunction with its Spring 2017 Art Show. The art show will take place April 5 through May 26, 2017, during the Azalea Festival. The objective of the art show is to showcase Wilmington’s history, people, architecture, parks, flora and fauna, cemeteries, riverfront, bridges, beaches, etc. in original artwork. To help further increase the artistic opportunities of the show, we are seeking submissions of artwork for a commemorative postcard contest. The purpose of the contest is to design a postcard promoting the Bellamy Mansion Spring 2017 Art Show.

The commemorative postcard contest is open to all North Carolina artists 18 years of age and older. There is no fee to enter the contest. Winner(s) will be selected by the Bellamy Mansion Spring 2017 Art Show committee. The winner(s) will be announced on December 15, 2016 via Bellamy Mansion’s website, social media and email campaign. All artists may submit one 2-D or 3-D media. Along with their image or artwork, artists should submit a one-paragraph description of the design concept in a text file (.doc or .docx).  

 

The winning postcard(s) may be turned into a poster for promotional purposes. The original postcard artwork will be raffled off during the opening reception. The winning artist will receive 50% of the auction price or divided evenly if there is more than one winning artist. The other 50 percent of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to Bellamy Mansion and Museum. The winning postcard(s) will be reproduced and reprinted for resale and publicity. Artists grant permission and rights to use the postcard image with submission entry.

About Bellamy Mansion

The Bellamy Mansion Museum of History and Design Arts, located in historic downtown, Wilmington, NC was built between 1859 and 1861. Located on Market Street in the heart of the extensive historic overlay district, this spectacular mansion is one of North Carolina’s finest examples of the art of architecture. Designed with Greek Revival and Italianate styling, the house was constructed with the labor of both enslaved skilled carpenters, and local, freed black artisans. The mansion is open for individual, group and school tours six days a week, hosts a rich educational program and features art exhibitions and musical programs.

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be help on Thursday November 10 from 6-8 pm at the Arboretum.

Metal sculptor Dumay Gorham will present the program. Dumay is a Wilmington native and successful artist who specializes in custom metal designs and fabrication. He works in copper, brass, steel, and stainless steel as well as fiberglass and urethanes.

Diverse Works

Thalian Association Children’s Theater performance of ‘ELF, JR’ Dec 1-4, 2016 

at the Hannah Block Community Arts Center at 2nd & Orange.

 

Each participating artist will be assigned to  at least one of the 32 performers  to paint.  The

paintings will be created from reference photos taken by the artists of the

cast members in their costumes Saturday, Nov 12, 10:30AM.

 

The paintings will be on display and for sale during the performances in the

lobby of the HBC.  

                                         CRITERIA FOR ARTWORK

Mediums:  watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel, collage, charcoal or mixed media (no photography).

 

Size:  Not to exceed 11 X14 (not including the frame)

 

Price:  Not to exceed $100 (Frames may be priced additionally)

We will meet at the Arboretum starting at 6 pm for social time. Then a short business meeting and a Committee Fair are planned. There will be a few surprises!

Members Online Gallery

Starting an online members gallery was brought up during our September meeting.

This will be a place to post your art for anyone to see. It can be for sale or just for show, and more important, it will be a way for us to get to know each other better.
We will need pictures and words from you.
You need to submit 1) a pretty good picture (digital image) of your art.
You will also need 2) to write the name of the piece and the medium, and any other pertinent info.
Please include one or two sentences about yourself or the piece.
Keep it brief but interesting. Artists will eventually have many pieces in the gallery, and info will accumulate.
You may submit as much work as you like, one at a time, to waaeblast@gmail.com
Ideally we will have one post per day.
