Art instructor and Education Chair, Kirah Van Sickle, presents a half-day workshop on developing skills in effective critiques For the artist who wants to improve and make objective analysis of their work and that of others, join us for:

The Art of the Critique
When: Sunday, February 23, 2014
Where: NH County Arboretum Auditorium, Wilmington, North Carolina
Time: 1:30 - 5:00 pm
Price: $25
Registration Deadline: February 21, 2014

This workshop is all about taking the fear out of receiving, and giving thoughtful, effective critiques. The term “critique” makes us defensive and has a negative connotation, but having a roadmap for proper analysis and knowing the right questions to ask can make for a dynamic discussion and rich learning experience as you move to improve your work and engage with the art and artist around you.  We will also discuss what judges look for in selecting work for juried shows, as well as actively participate in receiving and giving critiques of our works. Each registrant is asked to bring two works, either presumed to be finished, or in progress. This is a rich opportunity to get feedback before the spring show season!

Kirah brings a positive, academic approach to critique as well as a strong foundation of design and art fundamentals.

Email Kirah at kirahart@yahoo.com or call to reserve, 775-291-7578.
Space limited to 15.

Congratulations to Helen Shalfi!!!!

Helen Shalfi's memoir "The Snow" and painting are featured in the February issue of Salt magazine.  She is the second place winner - "Best Reader Memoirs 2014. "Helen is an art instructor at Brunswick Community College and a member of WAA.

Many members are taking advantage of the cold weather to clean up their studios and are finding treasures they can no longer use.  For February’s program WAA will be hosting a White Elephant-type event to help distribute this hidden wealth.  This event is open to all WAA members and guests and will take place just after the regular WAA monthly business meeting on February 13.  No commissions, no fees.....

Gently used art supplies can be free or have a reasonable price clearly marked on each one.  No charges; cash or check only.  Each participant must provide an inventory for the use of the sales table and should use a code so that items are easily tracked for payment to the participating artist. (KBili – 1, KBili – 2, etc.) at the conclusion of the event.   Two people will be needed to man a check-out area; contact Kay Bilisoly kzart@bellsouth.net if you would like to do this.

This is not an artwork sale.  If you haven’t already started your “what do I do with this pile” what are you waiting for?  Here’s your chance to get rid of it.  Bring supplies only—such as
·  frames
·  papers
·  paints
·  supplies (brushes, palettes)
·  drawing materials
·  collage ephemera
·  jewelry supplies,
·  books/magazines
·  FREE stuff!
