Painting Still Life, Landscapes, and the Human head in Watercolor
From Tuesday October 27 to Thursday October 29, well known Wilmington artist Betty Brown will teach a three day workshop at the New Hanover County Arboretum
from 9 am to 4 pm.
It is aimed to help master the art of painting landscapes, still life, and the human head.
Students will need a minimal background of painting in this medium.

2016 Poster Art Contest
For the 34th Annual Juried Spring Art Show & Sale
The 2016 Spring Show Committee announces the Poster Art Contest for the 34th Annual Juried Art Show & Sale (Show). The winning artwork will be used to publicize the Show and will be featured on a framed poster to be auctioned off at the Show. The image will also be on posters, smaller posters, cards and invitations that will be for sale during the show.
Entry requirements· Current membership (2015) in the WAA· Artwork in any 2-D media and on any non-offensive subject· *New Submission Option High quality resolution images of 3-D work.· One piece of artwork per artistSubmission requirements· Entry must be emailed to bcarter.art@outlook.com. Your entry should include artwork in .jpg format as well as artist’s name, address, phone number and email address.· Signature on the artwork must be blocked.· Submittal of entries opens October 1, 2015· Deadline to receive entries is 8pm Eastern Standard Time, Saturday November 28, 2015.SelectionThe Show committee will select the winning artwork on Tuesday December 01, 2015. PASTEL DEMONSTRATION for Next Meeting
Our next General Membership Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 8th, 2015. We will meet as usual at 6.30pm. The meeting will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 16 North 16th Street - that is at the junction of Market and 16th Streets. Parking is around the back of the church off Princess. PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE OF VENUE!
Our speaker will be Bonnie Rogers who teaches pastel figure drawing at the Cameron Museum School. Bonnie will give a demonstration of her beautiful pastel work and will demo a live figure painting in pastel. She is excited to share her passion with like-minded artists. Bonnie has a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Arts from UNC-Wilmington. She worked as a graphic designer and is an award-winning artist and teacher in pastel and oils.
Her work is figurative, and she also enjoys landscape painting en plein air.
Let your friends know - and remind them of the venue change. This change is just for October's meeting. The meeting in November will be at NHC Arboretum, when we will welcome Justine Ferreri, well-known Wilmington clay artist.

Call to Artists
“BABES IN TOYLAND” ART SHOW
WAA Artists are invited to participate in an art show in collaboration with the
Thalian Association Children’s Theater performance of “Babes in Toyland”
Dec 3-6, 2015 at the Hannah Block Community Arts Center at 2nd & Orange.
Each participating artist will be assigned a performer to paint. The paintings will be
created from reference photographs taken by the artists of the performers in their
costumes two weeks prior to the event.
The paintings will be on display and for sale during the performances in the
lobby of the HBC.
CRITERIA FOR ARTWORK
Mediums: watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel, collage, charcoal or mixed media (no photography)
Size: Not to exceed 11” x 14”
Price: Not to exceed $100 (Frames may be priced additionally)
All paintings must be ready to hang, framed or gallery wrapped. (no sawtooth hangers)
The Community Art Center will receive 20% commission.

Reminder of Thursday's Meeting
The upcoming General Meeting Thursday evening at the Arboretum has been planned with fun in mind. After the 7 pm meeting, there will be another time of socializing, more snacks, information sharing, and great door prizes. It may be of special interest to newer members who want to learn more about the many things that WAA is involved in and perhaps find a niche for using their own interests and talents.

Don't wait; register today. If you need help with online registration, please let us know. Remember you can also hand deliver a hard copy or your registration to Arboretum Office. Please make sure to include payment and photos of your artwork for jurying.

Arboretum Show Inventory and Barcodes
All registered artists for Art in the Arboretum should go ahead and enter their art items into the inventory section of the MySaleManager.Net (MSM) website. Once entered into inventory, you can print the barcode tags that will be used to check-in and then sell art items. Each of the check-in and check-out workstations will include barcode scanners. This way we can keep better track of sold inventory to ensure that all artists are paid correctly.

The Arts Council of Wilmington & NHC invites artists to Paint Out Wilmington!, an annual plein air event in Wilmington, NC, October 11-17, 2015. Both painter and subject must be outdoors, and photographs are not used. The event is open to any artist who uses oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastels, pencil, or pen/ink.
Artists will find no shortage of picturesque backdrops in downtown Wilmington, which features nearly two miles of Riverwalk along the Cape Fear River and a 230+ block National Register Historic District.
Sponsored by the Arts Council of Wilmington, in association with the Wilmington Art Association, Paint Out Wilmington! 2015 will feature Adult and Youth divisions. The opening event will showcase youth ages 12-18 in a one-day plein air event on Sunday, October 11, 2015. The exhibition and sale will take place in Bijou Park in downtown Wilmington on Sunday, October 11, 2015.
The Adult Division will run from Sunday, October 11, through Friday, October 16, 2015. The exhibition and sale will take place in and around Bijou Park in downtown Wilmington on Saturday, October 17, 2015.
WHERE:
Paint Out Wilmington! will be held within the prescribed boundaries of Water St. to 17th St. from the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge to the Isabel Holmes Bridge.
ENTRY FEES:
The entry fee for the Adult Division is $30. There is no entry fee for the Youth Division.
AWARDS:
Adult Division: Cash prizes will be awarded to: Best of Show - $1000; Second Place - $500; and Third Place - $250. A People’s Choice Award and five (5) Honorable Mention Citations will also be awarded.
Youth Division: Cash prizes will be awarded to Best of Show - $100; Second Place - $50; and Third Place - $25.
THE JUROR:
Chad Smith has shown in national juried exhibitions including: Finger Lakes Plein Air (Best of Show), Plein Air Easton! (Honorable Mention), American Impressionist Society’s Annual National Juried Exhibitions, and Crested Butte Plein Air Invitationals, to name a few. Smith, who recently spent a month painting and teaching in Ireland, has gallery representation in New York, Colorado, Florida, South Carolina and is collected internationally. He currently resides in Durham, NC.

General Membership Meeting Thursday September 10
The next Wilmington Art Association meeting will be held at the New Hanover County Arboretum on Oleander Drive with social time starting at 6:30 pm.
The business meeting will start at 7 and will be followed by a Committee Fair. Our Board members and committee heads have enjoyed putting together visuals and information to share with everyone. It will give all who attend an opportunity to talk, ask questions, and see the many things that WAA does and how you may like to get involved.
There will be drawings for goodies at each committee table.
Benefit Art Auction
Lynn Padgett is a former member of the Wilmington Art Association who passed away from cancer in April of 2015.
Her family has donated 80 original paintings for a Silent Art Auction to be held at Sneads Ferry Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 19, 2015 to benefit Barium Springs Home for Children (a favorite charity of Lynn's) and the local area Benevolence fund.
The Auction is open from 1-6. Refreshments will be served at 6 pm while the auction bids are tallied.
Lynn’s life’s accomplishments and achievements will be honored at this time by her family and friends and presentation of funds to each organization will be made.

WAA's Upcoming Workshop
Well-known watercolorist Betty Brown will teach a three-day workshop October 27th, 28th, and 29th from 9.30am to 4pm at the NHC Arboretum.
The workshop is titled: "Painting Still Life, Landscape, and the Human Head in Watercolor". This a wonderful opportunity with a fun and talented teacher!
Betty has extensive experience having painted in watercolor for the past forty years.
She was first mentored by Alex Powers of Myrtle Beach and continued with Gladys Faris and many nationally known instructors including Charles Reid, Jeanne Dobie and Zoltan Szabo. Her work is included in collections nation-wide.
Participants will have plenty of individual painting time and demos as needed.
