It's time for the Annual Member Picnic!!!
Members, their families and guests are invited as we fire up the grills and kick off the summer with our annual picnic. Please consider bringing a new member or someone that would like to learn more about the WAA. This is our last "meeting" until September.

Where: Hugh Macrae Park Paviliion #5
When: Thursday, June 12 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
BYOB and a side dish, dessert or appetizer to share.
Hotdogs, water and sodas provided.

We will have the group painting project with raffle.
Bring the paddle ball, bocce and appetite for fun!!!

Art in the Arboretum Show


This show historically is a very successful sales event for participants in all media. The show is open to 2-D and 3-D artists, both professional and emerging, 18 years and older.  Categories include: jewelry, glass, textiles, metal work, sculptures, stone, wood, paintings and photography. The artwork will be displayed amidst the beautiful Arboretum Gardens, as well as inside the buildings of the Arboretum.
The Show dates are October 3rd, 4th & 5th.
The registration deadline is September 19th.

COLLAGE  ARTISTS OF WILMINGTON WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT

Collage Artists of Wilmington (CAW) present a free workshop,
"CAW in the Garden", Wednesday evening, June 25, 2014. 
 
The setting is the meeting space in the lovely nursery,
"Deeply Rooted Gardens" located at
6209 Carolina Beach Rd., Wilmington, NC 28412.

The evening will offer an opportunity to enrich your art as well as meet other collage artists. 

Schedule
6:30 - 7:00 PM - Meet and Greet (refreshments and garden tour)
7:00 - 8:00 PM - Welcome and Program

Program: 
Demonstrations by 3 collage artists:
Alouise Fenstermacher - rice paper
Donna Moore – Gelli print
Kirah van Sickle - image transfer
All participants will rotate through each presenter.

Directions:  Deeply Rooted Gardens is located south of Monkey Junction on Carolina Beach Road between Sanders Rd. (stop light) and Cathey Rd.  If you are driving south on Carolina Beach Road, look for Myrtle Grove Animal Hospital on your left.  Deeply Rooted Gardens will be the next business, however, you will need to make a U-turn at the Cathey Rd.

Call to Artists

     Manifest Design, a lovely interior design store located at 200 N. Front Street
has made an offer to display 2D & 3D WAA art.
     Owner, Connie Lincoln would like to display each selected piece for 60 days
at a time.  Artists may submit two jpeg images to :  <connie.manifest@gmail.com>
from May 1- May 15. (two images per artist)  Either show frame in image or
describe frame.  Give dimensions  and medium.   All sizes accepted.  Unframed art on canvas may be selected.
      Connie will contact you by return email if your work is selected.  Art must be
delivered to Manifest Design by May 27.
     Commissions:  35% to Manifest Design, 5% to WAA.
      Must be WAA member to enter.

Wilmington Art Association member "Karen Wiles" won Third Place in the recent Waccamaw Art Guild held Thursday night in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for "WHEN A WOMAN DREAMS."  This is Wiles' second award as she received a Gold Ribbon Award from the Cape Fear Camera Club in the late fall of 2013.


 
Attention WAA Artists!  The Landfall Foundation Art Show opened May 1st.  The show is 50% full already.  If you plan to enter, please consider registering NOW.



Handmade Wilmington is organizing an Arboretum Artisan Market to coincide with The Cape Fear Water Garden Tour on June 7, 2014 from 9am - 4pm.  The Water Garden Tour is an annual event that drives lots of visitors to the lovely New Hanover County Arboretum.  All the booth fees paid by vendors for this event will benefit The Ability Garden at the Arboretum.
Booth Fee is $40

WAA Silver Arts Reminder May 1, 2014

I am pleased to announce that between the Visual Arts and the Heritage Arts, the two categories of the SilverArts that the Wilmington Art Association is sponsoring this year, we have a total of 342 pieces of art work entered in this state sponsored Art Competition.  Also for your information the Cape Fear Woodcarvers Club will be exhibiting their creations and demonstrating their craft during this three day event.  Tinga Nursery is helping to make the Reception area lovely for Mother’s Day weekend with some trees and flowering bushes. So invite your friends and neighbors to come to the SilverArts Exhibition and Sale.   Dates to remember for your convenience below.

Save the dates of June 2 through June 6 for the “Creative Realism in Watercolor” workshop at Franklin Square Gallery in Southport with internationally recognized artist, Judi Betts, AWS, NWS. In this workshop you will explore traditional and contemporary approaches to painting, learn to generate new ideas, simplify design, use color and light in exciting ways, and capture mood and emotion. For those interested in designing paintings with figures, Judi will give time for this challenge using students’ own photos of family and friends.
Judi has attained an international reputation for her transparent watercolor paintings that “sparkle”. Her paintings have won over 100 awards in major competitions; have appeared on national TV, wine labels, CDs, DVDs, and in over 35 books. She is the author of the award winning books, “Watercolor..Let’s Think About It!” (5th printing) and “Painting..a Quest toward Xtraordinary (5 awards) and is a contributor to many prominent art magazines. Cost for the “Creative Realism in Watercolor” with Judi Betts at Franklin Square Gallery in Southport, NC, June 2 through June 6 is $400.
