No Meet and Greet This Week

Dear WAA Members,

We are so sorry, but we will have to postpone our very first "Meet & Greet" of 2016. We were scheduled to have this event on this coming Wednesday, January 20th, but my diagnosis of pneumonia this morning has stopped me a bit in my tracks.

I will be speaking with the Arboretum staff first thing Monday morning to come up with an alternate date for February or March. If it ends up rescheduled for March, we can have a "Swing into Spring!" theme—flowers will be blooming by then. (at least some!).

We will let you know the new date and time as soon as we have that settled with the Arboretum. It was so great to see so many of you at our Members’ Meeting on Thursday! We hope to see you all back for the ‘new’ Meet & Greet. Until then, keep creating lots of lovely art!

Call for Artists for WAA at Porter’s Neck Port City Java Café

 

 All WAA members in good standing are eligible to apply to show 2D artwork in the Port City Java (PCJ) Porter’s Neck for the first installment in 2016.  The show will be hung for 4 months.  If interested, please contact Kevin at kevindunn1981@gmail.com.

Upcoming Programs

 

Here is a list of WAA Programs and Speakers for 2016 General Membership Meetings.  Meetings are held at 6.30pm at NHC Arboretum, unless otherwise noted.

January  14th:  This month we welcomed printmaker, Susan Baehmann to talk about "Original prints versus Giclees". 

 

 

February 11th:  Pastel Demonstration and talk by Bonnie Rogers.  Rogers teaches pastel figure drawing at the Cameron Museum School.  She will demo a live pastel figure drawing, and is excited to share her passion for pastel with fellow artists.  Bonnie is a graduate in Creative Arts from UNCW and was a graphic artist for many years.

March 10th:  Our presenter will be Kelly Starbuck of SALT Studio Photography.  A well-known local photographer, Kelly has had work displayed in Town & Country and Southern Living Magazines, on Larry King Live, and in numerous local and national publications.  She specializes in photographing pieces of art for shows, and will speak about her background and experiences.

April  -  WAA Spring Show and Sale - no program.     

April 11th-13th:  WAA Workshop by Chad Smith entitled "Plein Air Concepts"

May 12th (At St. Paul's): WAA member and local oil painter known nationally for her outstanding work, Joanne Geisel  will explain and demonstrate her process as she begins an oil painting.  She will also share her thoughts on gallery representation, including creating a body of work, resume, cover letter and researching and approaching galleries.

June 9th:  WAA Annual Spring Picnic and Painting Party at Hugh Macrae Park

July and August - no programs.  Will be arranging a workshop.

September 8th:  Charles Robertson will present a program and demo on encaustics.

October13th:  TBA      Workshop with Michael Chesley Johnson - date and title TBA

November 10th:  TBA

December 8th:  WAA Annual Holiday Party

Meeting this Week

 

The General Membership Meeting is on Thursday, January 14th at the New Hanover County Arboretum on Oleander Drive.  We begin at 6.30pm with a social and refreshments.  The meeting starts at 7pm.  This month we welcome Susan Baehmann, printmaker, as our speaker.  Her talk is entitled "Original Prints versus Giclees".  Susan will explain prints made on an etching press: intaglio, etching and monotypes.  She will speak about her background, how she came to printmaking and her process.  She will have examples of her beautiful work which is collected nationwide.

Spring Show News

 

The registration system for accepting submissions for the 34th Annual Juried Spring Art Show and Sale is now up and running.

 

Deadline for submissions is February 29th.

 

Prizes totaling more than $4000 are awarded in many categories.

The show is held at the Hannah Block Community Art Center, 120 S. Second
Street in historic downtown Wilmington.
This is the largest Art Show the Wilmington Art Association undertakes during the year.
It is open to 2D and 3D artist 18 years of age or older, in a variety of media.  
The show is juried and judged.
2-3,000+ people usually walk through the exhibit.

The committee is working hard to make this wonderful event take
shape. Members are given a chance to help during the actual days of the show, so please sign up at one of our meetings or contact the Show Chair: Maria E Williams

Next Meeting: Thursday January 14

Our speaker on January 14th is printmaker, Susan Baehmann.  Her talk is entitled "Original Prints versus Giclees".  Susan will explain the prints made on an etching press: intaglio, etching and monotypes.  She will speak about her background, how she came to printmaking, and her process.  She will have examples of her beautiful work which is collected nationwide.

Susan says:  "My primary interest is in the never-ending variance of moods, shapes, forms and colors to be found in nature.  The significance of objects and how they relate to each other on paper become arrangements of my impressions of reality."

 

Social time will begin at 6:30 and the meeting will start at 7 pm.

Call for Artists!

Tipping Paint Gallery in Raleigh will be accepting applications for "Spring Forward," a juried show that will be held during March.

Juror for the show will be Rick Bennett, a founding father of Tipping Paint and accomplished artist and instructor.

Show them what springs you into action!

Two jpg entries per artist will be considered. Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2016.

Happy Holidays to you all!

As Chair of the WAA Education Committee, I do hope that you have enjoyed our 2015 programs and workshops.  The Holiday Dinner was a warm and celebratory event, and we all had a grand social time. 

Planning for 2016 continues, and we have some super speakers lined up for our 2nd-Thursday-of-the-month evening Membership Meetings.   Mark your new calendars now!!  Presenters will include Bonnie Rogers, pastel demo, Susan Baehmann, printmaking, Kelly Starbuck, photography, Charles Robertson, encaustics and Joanne Geisel, demo in oils.   A workshop by Chad Smith will be titled "Plein Air Concepts".  Further details on dates and sign-up will follow after the holidays. 

Meanwhile,  I send you all warmest best wishes for prosperity, good health and inspiration in the New Year.   And get creating for the Spring Show!

Call to Artists

 

Wilmington Art Association (WAA) solicits the work of artists for its 34th Annual Juried Spring Show and Sale. This show will be open April 8-10, 2016 in Wilmington, NC during the North Carolina Azalea Festival.

 

The juror/judge for this show will be Chad Matthew Smith of Durham, NC. Smith is represented nationally in galleries from New York to Colorado and his work is collected internationally. He has garnered awards at the Finger Lakes Plein Air Show and at the American Impressionist Society's Annual National Juried Exhibition and has conducted numerous workshops.

 

Submissions may be made from 11 January through 29 February 2016.

The show is open to all artists 18 years of age and older and will include original works in painting, pastel, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital imaging, fiber art, mixed media and three-dimensional work. Monetary and merchandise awards will be in excess of $4000.

Congratulations!

- Kay Bilisoly's painting of "How'd She Do That?" was chosen to be on the poster for the 2016 Spring Show.


- Elena Wright won 3rd place for original lantern design in the Cameron Art Museum show "Art of Illumination." It was titled "Shine."
 

- These members were winners in the Art Show at the Holiday Dinner.

Spring Show News

The poster contest winner was selected at the December 2nd committee meeting and will be announced at the WAA Christmas dinner on Thursday. Hope to see you there!
Thanks to all twenty-six artists who entered.

Starting January 11 and going through 5 pm February 29, 2016,  we will be accepting jpeg images of artwork you would like to enter in the show.
