Demo from Last Meeting Completed
On May 12th, 2016 Wilmington Art Association welcomed well-known artist and instructor Joanne Geisel as presenter at our monthly Membership Meeting. Geisel's presentation was titled: "Creating Dynamic Impact with Values". She explained and demonstrated her process as she begins an oil painting. The work below is the finished piece from the demonstration. She also shared her thoughts on gallery representation including creating a body of work, resume, cover letter, and researching and approaching galleries. Joanne is an award-winning North Carolina artist, and she is often found painting en plein air in Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington.

2016 Carolina Beach Street Arts Festival: Interactive Festival
“Be Part of the Arts”
The Carolina Beach Street Arts Festival is an all-day event to be held May 21st from 10 am to 5 pm, on Cape Fear Blvd. in Carolina Beach.
This interactive festival celebrates the arts from visual, performing, and culinary arts with over seventy artists from around the region!
The community art project this year is a six foot painting of one of Stephanie Kiker’s coloring book images. Jan Feury is the guest artist who will help guide participants to paint this beautiful community artwork.
Shop fine arts and crafts, participate in the community art project, and join in on a hoop or drum circle. Enjoy performances all day including The Broccoli Brothers Circus at noon.
Learn to line dance or shag, too.
Lifetime Membership Awards
The Board would like to recognize those members who have have given generously of their time and talents through the years to the WAA.

The Board has agreed to these requirements.
1. A candidate must be a long-standing member of WAA and age 75 or older.
2. A candidate must have made significant contributions to the growth and development of WAA over an extended period of time, whether as an officer and board member or chair of a critical association committee.
3. A candidate must be an ongoing ambassador promoting WAA in the arts community.
4. Any WAA member in good standing can submit a written recommendation detailing the nominee's accomplishments. The award will be voted upon by the WAA Board of Directors. A limit of two persons per year can be selected.
5. The sole benefit of this award is that the recipient will be considered to be a full-fledged member of the WAA without paying dues for as long as he/she desires.

Meeting Thursday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church
Our general meeting will be Thursday May 12 at 6:30 pm.
It will NOT be held at the Arboretum.
It WILL be held at St. Paul's Episcopal at the corner of Market and 6th Streets.
Parking is in the church parking lot on Princess Street or on the street.

Jewish Film Festival
Thalian Hall will be presenting an especially fascinating film on Tuesday night, May 10 at 7 pm, Raise the Roof.

Artist's opening reception for Chris Bloom will be at Sweet Nectar in the Waterford Commons, Leland on June 3rd from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Paintings will hang until July.
Winner of UNCW scholarship
On Wednesday, May 4th, we met with Beau Cummings from UNCW to present him with a $1,000.00 check from the Wilmington Art Association for a scholarship to be given to a current UNCW visual arts student.
Liz Hosier, President of the WAA, presented the check. Also present was Chris Bloom, Community Outreach Coordinator.
Art Exhibition by Cape Fear Men's Club
Saturday May 14 from 1 - 5 pm, the members and spouses of the Cape Fear Men's Club will be having an exhibition of art that includes paintings, pottery, sculpture and literary works.
It will be held at the Northeast Public Library in the Painter Room.
WAA members are invited.

Community Outreach Update
COMMUNITY OUTREACH UPDATE
The New Hanover County High School Student Art Competition will take place this Memorial Day Weekend at the Hannah Block Community Arts Center at 2nd and Orange Street. This event is held in conjunction with the Orange Street Arts Fest, a long standing and fun community event.

Each high school submits 15 pieces of 2D and 3D art work to be judged. There are 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention Ribbons awarded.

Scholarships: We met with CFCC in March and met our scholarship recipient, Christopher Maupin. This week we should meet with UNCW to finalize our scholarship donation to the university.

PLEIN AIR CLASSES
Joanne Geisel will also be teaching outdoor painting classes starting May 4.
Each week she will do a demonstration explaining her planning and painting processes including composition, values, and color choices. There will be lots of time to paint.
She will also provide individual instruction. What a great way to enjoy the out of doors!
