OPEN LETTER TO MEMBERS

 

Betsy Heckethorn and I painted together every Wednesday at Jackie Malpass' home in what we call Jac's Shak. We numbered  five or six depending who was in town. Jeanne Gowdy, Yvonne Jones, Diane McCord, Jackie, Betsy and me. We are going to miss Betsy dearly as we always had such a grand time together. We all used different mediums but were always able to give each artist a word of advice if we felt it would help out our friend. Occasionally we invited another painter to join us. We called this group "The Color Wheels'" and each of us chose our favorite color to represent. We also referred to our weekly meetings as our analysis sessions. We all felt better when our sessions were over and we had aired all of our problems. You could clear up any problems each needed to air then laugh at the  similarities we all shared.

 

Bob Gera was also a grand artist who could do some marvelous Black and White Charcoal drawings. Bob and I used to work together when Wilmington Art Association had our Gallery on Castle and Chandlers Wharf. He was an interesting fellow and fun to spend time with while working our shared times of the month. Bob was 91 and had a very interesting life. He had been a Purple Heart recipient and had been a designer with a furniture company when he and his wife Ann lived in New York City.

Reception will be held Thursday April 9 from 5 - 7 pm.

WHITE only please.

Preferably it should be brought chilled to the Hannah Block Art Center on Thursday afternoon.

 

2. We also need volunteers for bartending/wine pouring during the reception.

20TH ANNIVERSARY
Orange Street ArtsFest

 

 

WILMINGTON, NC – The Thalian Association is seeking artists for the 20th Anniversary Orange Street ArtsFest, Memorial Day weekend, Saturday May 23rd from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday May 24th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The celebrated street fair is held on Orange Street next to the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center with some exhibitors inside the building. The popular juried show is the largest arts festival in downtown Wilmington and will feature over 60 artists with $550.00 in prize money.

 

Applicants must submit a color photo of original work in acrylic, oils, watercolor, sculpture, drawing, graphics, wearable arts, leather jewelry, clay, glass, fiber, metal work or mixed media. Photographically or commercially reproduced work is also acceptable in limited editions, signed and numbered by the artist. The Orange Street ArtsFest is a family friendly event for visitors of all ages also featuring entertainment form Thalian Association and their Children’s Theater, old fashioned fair food, and the signature cuisine of celebrity chef Keith Rhodes and the Catch Food Truck.

 

 

Sad News

It is with great sadness that we share this information.  

Our long time member of the Wilmington Art Association, Betsy Heckethorn, passed away this morning at her home.

 

Betsy was ​very dedicated to the WAA. She served as Spring Show Chair for several years, our Treasurer for many years, taught art classes for the elderly at the Hannah Block Center and was one who was well versed in our By-Laws. She was our "go to person" when anyone had a question regarding past history. Betsy will be truly missed.  

 

The service will be held at Andrews Mortuary  4108 S. College Rd. on Monday, March 23 at 10:00.  

After the service, WAA members are invited to visit with the family at Betsy's home.  The address is 418 W. Blackbeard Rd. Wilmington, NC.

There are very clear directions on how to present bin work.

READING THE PROSPECTUS CAREFULLY will reduce problems on entry day,

WAA / Thalian Association Children's Theater - Art Show  WAA artists in good standing are invited to paint the CATS Thalian Association's Children’s Theater performers in costume for an art show at the Hannah Block Community Arts Center. Paintings will be for sale during the performance dates of May 14-17, 2015. Sign up deadline is April 1st. Artists will photograph actors in costume on Saturday, April 25.  Paintings will be then be created from their reference photographs. For details click here. Questions? WAA has been asked to provide paintings OF the Arboretum Gardens to be

displayed in the Arboretum main office building and the hallway outside the gift shop.

One painting or photograph will be accepted from each artist. 

 

The framed or gallery wrapped art will be displayed for three months and be for sale with a 20% commission going to the Arboretum.  If the number of entries exceeds the space available, the artwork will be chosen by drawing names.  The remaining art will then be hung for the following three months.  Deadline for entry is April 1, 2015.

Silver Arts

 

The WAA invites all 2D and 3D artists over the age of fifty to participate in the Silver Arts, a component of Senior Games by the Sea, to be held May 8 -10, 2015 at theArtWorkstm  200 Willard Street, Wilmington.

 

All first, second, and third place winners will have the opportunity, if they choose, to compete in the State Finals in Raleigh in the fall.

 

There are four categories in Silver Arts: Visual Arts, Heritage Arts, Literary Arts, and Performing Arts. The WAA is participating by sponsoring the Visual and Heritage Arts part of this state sponsored event.

 

            DEADLINE to enter is April 15th 

· Total entry fee into the SilverArts is $15.00

· 5 pieces of art work can be entered into Visual Arts and Heritage Arts. 

However only 3 pieces in any one sub-category are allowed. ex: 3 mixed media and 2 oils.

· NEW this year: BIN WORK will be accepted 2D-5 pieces and 3D-2 pieces 

· Each sub-category---oils, acrylic, watercolor, woodwork, pottery, etc. 

will be judged separately with two separate judges for 2D and 3D.

· Private Reception and Award Ceremony for artists and guests.

· Exhibition and Sale for Visual Arts and Heritage Arts ----  

Will be open to the public for 3 days May 8 to May 10th--

giving you the opportunity to sell your creations.

Call for Artists

 

Plein Air at Wrightsville Beach

May 8 and 9, 2015

 

Plein air artists are invited to participate in the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History’s second plein air event. We will encourage the participation of the public in this event by inviting them to drop by and watch the artists as they paint. A portion of the sales of the works will support the museum.

 

Artists will have their canvases stamped at the museum beginning at 8 am on Friday May 8. Artists may paint until 2 pm on Saturday May 9. They will bring their paintings to the museum for A Wet Paint Sale 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm on the lawn and porch of the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History, 303 West Salisbury Street. The artists will gather and the public is invited to view and purchase an original piece of art. If the artist chooses, up to two unsold paintings per artist may be hung in the Museum through August.

Artists must register prior to the event. Registration will be limited to the first 40 artists who register and pay their registration fee. For more information, call the museum at 910-256-2569 or visit their website  www.wbmuseum.com .

We want to be sure you get this year's Art in the Arboretum on your calendar.  SO!  SAVE THE DATE for OCTOBER 2, 3 & 4.  Last year was extremely successful for both artists and the arboretum. A large part of this success had to do with the quality of art you provided and the generosity you demonstrated by participating in the show.
