January 28, 2014

Thank you so much for offering to ask the Wilmington Art Association to send out an email blast regarding possible donations for Coastal Animal Rescue Effort’s Third Annual Benefit and Silent Auction.

As we discussed, I’m volunteering for Coastal Animal Rescue Effort (CARE) which is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization set up by Atlantic Animal Hospital across from Mayfaire.  The organization is designed to provide care to homeless animals in medical need (with specialists, surgeries, medicines, etc.) and to help them find homes once they are healthy.  They are the only animal rescue around that is specific to those pets that need medical attention, something most other rescues do not have the facilities to provide. CARE’s ultimate goal is to build a non-profit no-kill veterinarian run animal shelter here in Wilmington.  I’ve attached some information.

CARE is having its Third Annual Benefit, The Pets Rock Event, on Friday, March 21nd where there will be a silent auction, live music, food etc… and we were hoping some local artists might consider donating art for the silent auction.  We expect to have a great turnout so there will definitely be good exposure for the artists. We are happy to include a bio, or any information the artists send, next to the artwork and all donors will be recognized on CARE’s website based on donation value.

CARE is truly a wonderful cause and the proceeds raised from these donations will help provide care, shelter, and finally a home for animals in need.  We thank the artists for considering becoming part of our benefit.

Thanks so much,
Susan

Artists’ Studio & Supplies Clear Out Event
Many members are taking advantage of the cold weather to clean up their studios and are finding treasures they can no longer use.  For February’s program WAA will be hosting a White Elephant-type event to help distribute this hidden wealth.  This event is open to all WAA members and guests and will take place just after the regular WAA monthly business meeting on February 13.  No commissions, no fees.....

Gently used art supplies can be free or have a reasonable price clearly marked on each one.  No charges; cash or check only.  Each participant must provide an inventory for the use of the sales table and should use a code so that items are easily tracked for payment to the participating artist. (KBili – 1, KBili – 2, etc.) at the conclusion of the event.   Two people will be needed to man a check-out area; contact Kay Bilisoly kzart@bellsouth.net if you would like to do this.

This is not an artwork sale.  If you haven’t already started your “what do I do with this pile” what are you waiting for?  Here’s your chance to get rid of it.  Bring supplies only—such as
·  frames
·  papers
·  paints
·  supplies (brushes, palettes)
·  drawing materials
·  collage ephemera
·  jewelry supplies,
·  books/magazines
·  FREE stuff!

36th Annual Artists’ Week Workshop
Sea View Inn, Pawleys Island, South Carolina, Friday April 25 – Friday, May 2, 2014, Instructor:  Betty Brown
It’s time to put the Artists’ Week Workshop at Sea View Inn on your calendar. The annual workshop continues with its 36th year of combining great painting locations with gorgeous spring weather. The charming shabby chic inn with three meals a day of low country cooking adds to the ambience for a most enjoyable workshop. Artists’ Week began in 1978. Betty Brown first studied there and became instructor for Artists’ Week in 2002, turning another page in the history of art at Sea View Inn.
Betty takes the artists to a new location each day. She has scouted out delightful spots for plein air painting. These include area plantations, Brookgreen Gardens, and historic cottages on the island. The week is informal and relaxed. Students are encouraged to do as much or as little as they desire. You can work on your own, or avail yourself of her instruction that focuses on the principles of design, color, and “learning to see.” Her teaching is geared toward helping individual painters find a positive attitude and direction in their unique approaches. Betty discourages a competitive atmosphere and provides encouragement for the students’ goals toward excellence. All levels are welcome as long as you feel comfortable. Beginners might want to get some painting done before coming. The groups are small enough to get individual attention. Betty will work or demonstrate in watercolor, but she is capable of helping in the media of your choice. The group winds down looking at and discussing each day’s paintings. Evenings can be spent watching videos or slides of other artists’ work. We reserve a time for painting the wait staff/models.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:  Betty Brown began her professional career in 1975, and has studied under many nationally recognized teachers. She holds degrees from Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she graduated with Honors in Art. She is a member of several professional organizations and is a Program Grant recipient. Her painting trips to Europe and across the United States provide a focus on the landscape, even though the figure

has long been a captivating challenge. Betty is also interested in Book Art and writing. She has extensive teaching experience in museum classes, workshops at John C. Campbell Folk School, regional workshops and with private students. Her work has been exhibited nationally and is found in the permanent collection of the Cameron Art Museum as well as corporate and private collections. Current work can be seen at New Elements Gallery in Wilmington, NC.
